I worked for a year in a bar in Inuvik, a small town in Canada’s arctic and noticed locals snicker and roll their eyes when someone new to the town was talking about the place as if they were experts.

I believe it is the same with journalists. It is easier to trust reporters who are local to the area.

Ideally, I would like my first job to be as a television reporter in Saskatchewan. It is where I am from and I feel as though I am aware of issues my community is facing.

Because I am Fransaskois and have been very involved in the local French community, I feel as though I have a lot to contribute. I believe starting out in a smaller market is an advantage because it is easier to get experience in various roles.

To get to this position I will be sending out a letter with my resume and a sample of my work in March asking the Société Radio Canada (SRC) for either an internship or a position.

I am reading quite a bit in French and am trying to speak French as much as possible. Being away from my community and studying for the past five years in English means I need to make extra effort to stay immersed for my grammar and language skills to be up to par. I am also actively looking for short internships in French speaking countries as another possible start.
